Leisureland Funworld Train
Galway's newest and latest rolling stock was officially launched by Mayor of Galway Cllr. Terry O'Flaherty in July 2003. The 'Leisureland Express' replaces the previous train, which had graced the tracks around SaIthill each summer for the last twenty years.
The train was launched at the annual open day for Galway's special needs community, which is organised by Nora and Russell Perks who have been running the fairground at Leisureland, Salthill for many seasons, bringing the latest thrills and amusements to Galway each summer.
Every year they have opened their doors to Galway's special needs community, for a fun-packed day to experience the thrill of the fair. Many of Galway City Councillors were also in attendance along with Galway's Special Olympics medal winners.
The train, specially commissioned for SaIthill and built by Severn Lamb of Stafford Upon Avon is substantially bigger than its predecessor. Francoise Lamb, Heinz Rossen and Sean O'Brien from Severn Lamb travelled over from the UK for the launch. 'We were delighted to have been awarded the contract to build the train for Salthill', said Francoise Lamb. 'Severn-Lamb, is a most unusual company, that has become the most inventive and successful train manufacturer in the world. We built rail trains from the smallest gauge up to 36" gauge, all beautifully detailed, including authentic Great Western and Old American style trains in a choice of drive systems. This includes live steam locomotives with authentic coaches on a 36" gauge track, which have been delivered to Euro-Disney and Port Aventura, Spain, the latest and newest large theme park in Europe. We are delighted to be associated with this project.'
